My Music Therapy Practice

I believe that Music Therapy is needed in our communities more than ever before. We face a growing mental health crisis with increasing numbers of young people struggling to find a place of comfort in a rapidly changing society. Waiting lists for referrals for support are bursting at the seams not just in mental health but in social care, education and  rehabilitation programmes. All of these, and many more, are where Music Therapy can help.

Through musical engagement, empathy, understanding and an individual approach tailored to a client's personal needs, I  offer Music Therapy in many different areas of physical, social and mental health as well as for those with specific learning needs.

A client-centred approach

I seek to create a space and environment that is:

  • Creative
  • Accessible
  • Interactive
  • Receptive
  • Voluntary

Music Therapy is a place of multiple possibilities

I adopt a relational, client-centred approach, seeking to work towards shared therapeutic goals and outcomes. There are multiple methods of working and it is important that as a Music Therapist, I keep abreast of latest published papers and scientific findings that may help to inform my practice. This will help to provide the client with the best possible support.

My training was psychodynamic informed which as a Music Therapist translates to exploring beyond the ‘surface’ level of musical interactions. This involves tapping into the subconscious, exploring associations and discovering potential triggers in order to better understand the client.

Those who engage are often surprised at how playful the sessions can be as they find new ways to release creativity and curiosity.

How I work

I seek to create and build a therapeutic relationship that is:

  • Psychodynamic-informed
  • Creative
  • Relational
  • Collaborative
  • Client-centred

Ways I work

I adopt and move fluidly between 3 key methods:

  • Observing
  • Listening
  • Enabling

My 'tools'

I use my ‘toolbox’ of musical elements to communicate with the client. These include:

  • Pulse
  • Rhythm
  • Melody
  • Harmony
  • Timbre
  • Structure

I also use musical instruments that I offer to and share with the client

My philosophy

Individuality

I respect and value the uniqueness of each person and therefore adapt my therapy to my client's individual needs.

Responsibility

I am committed to providing my client with the support they need.

Mutual Respect

I value each person as an individual and seek to understand your needs better, in order to offer you a positive and supportive Music Therapy journey.

Professional Development

My clinical work is supervised regularly by a highly experienced Music Therapist.

I participate in CPD (Continuing Professional Development) to support my practice. Recently this has included attending the European Music Therapy Conference in Hamburg (July 2025), undertaking further Safeguarding Training and attending network group meetings with other arts therapists.

Furthermore I undertake research linked to the specific work that I am doing.
